Life Doesn’t Start 10 Pounds From Now!
Many of us struggle with poor body image at some point in our lives, I know I have. The media bombards us daily with messages about being thinner, taller and prettier. We’ve been exposed to these messages since childhood, so it’s no surprise we feel our appearance doesn’t measure up.
I’m a Certified Image Consultant and women often tell me they want my help but not until they lose some weight. So I ask them: “Does life start 10 pounds from now? Are you saying the way you present yourself today isn’t important?” Every woman can look beautiful, regardless of size, shape or age. Taking pride in your appearance leads to a more positive opinion of yourself and your abilities, and allows you to experience more success in all areas of life. It may even help you lose weight.
Just think back to the last time you had a bad hair day or went to work in an outfit you disliked. I suspect it had a negative effect on your attitude that day. It doesn’t have to be that way if you dress for the body you have today instead of waiting for a body you hope to have 10 or 20 pounds from now. I promise it will be worth the effort.
Here are my Top 5 Tips for looking your best at all times:
- Wear clothes that fit well and skim over your body. Boxy, shapeless garments only make you look bigger and older. Knowing whether your body shape is a Diamond, Emerald, Ruby or Sapphire helps you select clothes to flatter your shape. Retail, off the rack, clothing may not perfectly fit your unique body shape. A good tailor is an important resource and may be less expensive than you think. Most charge about $9 for a hem and $14 to take in the waist of a garment.
- Wear more color, especially near your face. Black may be chic but it creates shadows on your face and amplifies wrinkles. Color reflects light onto your face, creating a more youthful appearance.
- Get fitted by a bra expert at least once a year and when you experience a change in your weight of 10 pounds or more. A good foundation is critical so your clothes will hang properly on your body and be flattering.
- Be sure your clothes are always in good repair, clean and free of wrinkles. If you can’t sew on a button, find a friend that will teach you this simple skill.
- Always keep your shoes in good repair and clean. Wipe your shoes with a damp cloth before wearing them. Pay special attention to heels that may be muddy. Replace heel taps and soles before they start to look ragged or make clicking noises on the floor as you walk. Your shoes complete your look; don’t let them be the one sour note in an otherwise great outfit.
